How to Find a Brand Name for Your Business

How do you think of a great brand name for your business? The best brand names represent a big idea. For example, in ancient Greek religion ‘Nike’ was the ‘Goddess of Victory’, so for this sporting goods and apparel company, the name ‘Nike’ conveys that their brand is all about winning. ‘Google’ is a play on the term ‘Googol’, which is the number 1 followed by 100 zeros – a number of nearly incomprehensible size. Google initially chose this name to describe its original big vision, to organize all of the world’s information.

With over 300 million brands in the world today, you’ll probably have to come up with hundreds, if not thousands, of name ideas for your business before you can find one that hasn’t already been taken. And it’s ever-increasingly more difficult to find a meaningful, unique name that you can register in a top TLD, especially as a .com domain name.

So if you are struggling to come up with the perfect name for your start up business, how do you create a great brand name? First, decide what your company’s “big idea” is. Then, try one of these naming methods below to help you come up with a great name of your own that you can brand, and let the world know what your company is all about.

Types of Names to Define Your Brand

Eponymous: Eponymous is a fancy word used to describe something that is named after a person. A great example of an eponymous name used for branding is Tesla. In 2003 Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning founded their electric car company, branding it as Tesla Motors as a tribute to inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla. Tesla was an engineer and scientist known for designing the alternating-current (AC) electric system, which is the predominant electrical system used across the world today.

Descriptive: Descriptive names can tell exactly what your company does. Examples of descriptive names in branding are American Airlines and The Home Depot. These names can be generic, and are therefore harder to protect.

Acronymic : Acronyms are simply shorthand versions of descriptive names. Examples of acronymic names are KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) and GE (General Electric).

Suggestive: Suggestive names can derived from these three categories:

  • Real words – Find a real word that suggests the benefits your company provides, ex: the definition of Uber is “an outstanding or supreme example”. With over 300 million company’s in the world it is difficult to find a real word in the dictionary that has not been used or registered as a domain.
  • Composite words – Combine two or more real words into one composite name to describe what your company does, ex: FaceBook.
  • Invented words – Since is increasingly more difficult to find real words that haven’t already been used, companies can create their own unique word that could be easily remembered. To come up with an invented word for your brand, scramble, remove or add letters from a real word, ex: ex: Pinterest.

Associative: An associative name reflects the meaning of a word back to your brand. A great example of an associative name in branding is Amazon. Since the Amazon is the World’s largest river, Jeff Bezos selected this name for his online book store, Amazon.com, who’s original slogan was “Earth’s biggest bookstore”. Another example is SiriusXM, Sirius is “the brightest star in the night sky”, so naturally, you’ll find the biggest stars in entertainment on Sirius satellite radio.

Non English: Online super-shoe-store ‘Zappos’ derived its namesake from the Spanish word for shoes, zapatos, and ‘Lego’ is an abbreviation of the two Danish words “leg godt”, meaning “play well” in Danish.

Abstract: The word ‘Rolex‘ has no intrinsic meaning or definition and is now known only as being the name of a luxury watch manufacturer.

After you find your perfect new brand name, make sure you go the extra step to be sure your company name doesn’t haven’t any negative or adverse meanings in other countries.
